Children in Bumblebee Room are of an age where they will begin to make more definitive choices for themselves; attachments are being formed and they begin to respond positively to the introduction of some useful boundaries. Communication is of great importance as children start to make that transition to a new level of independence. Bumblebee Room promotes these areas of development through various activities and experiences which are planned using observations and evaluations to ensure the educational opportunities correspond with the children’s needs and natural interests supported by experienced staff.
At this stage of their personal development, children become much more independent – feeding themselves, drinking from open cups, playing side-by-side with their friends and taking on a whole new approach to the ways in which they learn, develop and communicate. With this in mind, our large free flow Bumblebee Room is fully equipped to support and encourage the children’s learning, including age and stage-appropriate equipment and resources, child-height furniture, sinks and role play equipment, and the opportunities to investigate and explore in more detail.
As children become more mobile new opportunities for exploration and exercise arise. A safe and interesting environment helps children to develop curiosity, co-ordination and enhance their physical abilities. As our children gain confidence they are able to take part in more structured group-activities. By knowing each child’s individual needs, our staff can monitor and tailor your child’s developmental requirements. Social interaction is always very important and we encourage the children to develop friendships, interacting with other children in this group and other groups in the nursery.
During this period the children’s fine motor skills continue to develop and they enjoy making things using a variety of natural materials, looking at pictures, words and listening to stories. Children can play with sand and water, balls and hoops, tend to the plants and play with their friends.
A separate art area allows our children to develop their co-ordination skills, taking part in more messy and fun play as they finger-paint and make models to bring home for you. They have access to a huge array of art materials and books. Children find the tee-pee great fun and also a place to for quiet time to themselves. There is a dedicated ‘Home Corner’ , where they can practice important life skills and role-play. Role-play and dressing-up games cultivate the children’s friendships and encourages their self-expression.
All children are given opportunities to explore and develop at their own pace. There are areas within the room which allow your child to explore freely and offer them both independence and the security of adults when needed.
Singing & music play a large part in encouraging our toddlers to become more confident and communicative. We actively involve them in the making and baking of cakes and biscuits (with the expert help of the kitchen staff), which they can take home for their family to enjoy!
The children can enjoy activities such as mark making, using a variety of materials, looking at picture books and listening to stories, all of which are important steps in literacy. Self-help and independence soon emerge as we support and encourage children with eating, dressing and toileting. Joining-in with conversations is an important way to learn new things and helps your child to think about the past, present and future. Children in our Bumblebee Room enjoy learning new skills and your child will now automatically join active play with other children, with little or no encouragement.
Once again the children have access to our all-weather garden, where they can plant seeds and watch them grow, or just burn off some energy playing with friends.
